Horrible Experience – Misleading Information & Overpriced Shipping

I had an incredibly disappointing experience with SSMC when shipping a barrel and a TV from Miami, FL, to Montego Bay, Jamaica on January 28, 2025.

On January 22, I visited their office intending to ship a 50-inch Smart TV. During my conversation, I inquired about their barrel shipping services. I was quoted a ridiculously high price compared to other reputable shipping companies. I mentioned that I planned to use the Custom Allowance credit (issued to Jamaican residents for unaccompanied luggage) to cover my TV shipment while using another ocean freight shipper for a food barrel. Taniesha, the agent at the desk, incorrectly informed me that I could only use the allowance once, which I later found out was false.

I was quoted $380 with pickup or $330 without to ship both the barrel and the TV. I repeatedly asked whether this cost included the customs charges upon arrival in Jamaica, and on multiple occasions, I was told yes, it did. However, based on the excessive charges I am now incurring, I do not see how that could be true.

To make matters worse, I was given conflicting information about drop-off. I made it explicitly clear that I would be dropping off the additional item on Friday of that same week. However, Taniesha insisted that I had only two days after my father (the recipient) left the U.S. to deliver the barrel, which created unnecessary stress and confusion.

This has turned out to be the worst and most costly decision I have ever made. The average cost to ship a barrel with reputable companies is under $150, yet SSMC charges over $200 for a barrel of food. Despite multiple requests for an itemized breakdown of charges, they refused to provide one.

A process that should have cost me an estimated $25,000 JMD has now cost me twice that amount due to their misleading information and overcharging.

SSMC is the absolute worst shipping company I have ever dealt with. Their lack of transparency, inaccurate information, and inflated pricing make them completely unreliable. I would NEVER use them again and strongly urge others to avoid them at all costs.
