Coolest secret hide in Sydney CBD. Great staff who'll make you the best drinks
Great Bar with great drinks and great music, what more could you ask for ?
This building is a protected structure and you can see why. They have a " trad session " on a Sunday evening and boy it is brilliant. Its one of those places you have to put on your " to do list " and you will not be disappointed. Located in The Rocks it is well worth a visit.
The bar is hidden in the bottom of an old sandstone house in the heart of The Rocks, and the setting seems almost too good to be true. The level of service from the wait staff is a cut above, and the knowledge/selection of whisky available is up there with the best bars in Sydney. The prices are notably higher than your average bar, however it's clear you're paying for an experience.
Magnificent bar ! Great cocktails super friendly staff & lovely vibe. Definitely return
John & jackie
Amazing.
So the bar is located down the alleyway of 77, and downstairs. Don't go upstairs, because that's someone's residence (oops!)
Once found, be transported back to the 19th century with a good section of whisky, cheeses, and fantastic rooms of a former basement of a house where it's just you and your drink of choice, in one of the booths or rooms with proper aristocratic lounge chairs. The staff know their stuff and can recommend a glass or two. Pricey, yes, but boy is it dripping in Sydney history.
Great little whisky bar hidden under the streets of Sydney. Nice and cool during the 35+ degree day that we were there. Will definately be going back again. There selection of Japanese whiskies was fantastic.
Was shown this place by a tour guide who took me on an excellent convict tour of Sydney. Really atmospheric place. The bartenders made excellent well portioned cocktails. Top-notch stuff and a great place if you re in the Rocks. I think the owners is a bit of a nice guy however. I don t know why you would need three barmen for a place this size. There are three waitresses, two who spent most of the time having a good old natter. One asked if we wanted anything else and we asked to see the wine list but she never bothered coming back to see if we were interested in ordering anything. They also had a musician, again don t know why you would want this in a place of this type where a large portion of the patrons can t see him. He was very good but not necessary. Keep serving excellent cocktails and you ve got a winner. I ll definitely be back to help support this business.
Have to say I have just left The Doss House and witnessed some unreasonable behaviour from the bar staff, who intimidated and were disrespectful in not serving a young lady who was extremely well mannered and behaved in the area I was drinking.
I also approached the collective staff, who sided with each other stating that they were a team. Great teamwork guys but very unacceptable.
I will not be returning to this bar on principal.
Great hideaway spot with good music and a good looking venue. Staff were great.
Amazing bar, great atmosphere and the staff are superb. My new local.
Beautiful little underground pub. Warm, cosy, great live music, awesome mulled wine (the smell of it filled the whole place). Slightly Irish feel for me?? Very homely
Fantastic vibes! Great service! Amazing live music!
Great vibe in this historic venue. Go in on sundays to see a piece of the old world with the Irish community playing music. I felt like I was in Ireland. Couldn't rate it enough! Great cocktails and charcuterie selection
To avoid in these times of after covid, the policy is terrible.
Great addition to Sydney's whiskey bar scene. Good selection of whiskey and a kickarse fit out. Congrats Colm
Classic whiskys and whiskeys. Had a fantastic time. Staff are very well learned on all the different brands. Will be back!
This place is brilliant. I was only here for a quick drink before a night out, but wow!
Big selection of drinks with bartenders that know their drinks.
The atmosphere and decor is really inviting and really encourages you to grab a drink and catch up with friends.
Highly recommended!
Cracking little hidden bar in the heart of the Rocks. Worth a visit... if you can find it!
Great drinks. Could offer slightly more variety in food options but the platters were nice nonetheless.
I am a tourist and lost my way home from the Sydney opera house tonight. The gentlemen allowed me into this fine establishment and served me the finest of cheeses. I am forever grateful for their open doors and hearts. Love, Jesus.
Excellent underground whiskey bar ruined by atrocious customer service. #BaxstersForever
Best bar in Sydney! Good whiskey selection, awesome place!
The Rocks' Hidden Spot
Basement with classical charm
I feel a little narrow and stuffy
great little bar, nice an cosy. Great pint of Guinness and a Brilliant selection of whiskey
Abysmal.
My friend and I have been here for an hour and a half. Finally managed to get our first beer after about half an hour. Ordered a second round 40 minutes ago, still waiting.
Will never come back. There aren't even that many people here. Worst drinks service I have ever experienced.
I would give it zero stars if Google would let me.
What a hidden secret place! Really the best in Rocks and Sydney
Nice little place hidden in The Rocks. Awesome cocktails and friendly staff.
Located below street level, the doss house transports you back in time. The dim lighting provides a relaxed atmosphere while the old school leather chairs provide an extremely comfortable place to sink into and enjoy one of the many whiskies on offer. Visiting at 4:30pm on a satd there was plenty of room, but I suspect it would fill up pretty quickly at busy times as it is not a big place. The bar staff were extremely helpful in discussing whiskies, and the cheeses on offer looked amazing.
Horrendous experience, greeted belatedly via a very aggressive manager. Worst service I have seen in 6 years in Sydney
Doss House has an impressive whiskey menu and cool vibe. It was recently voted one of the best small bars in Sydney by TimeOut, easy to see why.
It s set underground in a sandstone building with lots of little books to hide away in. There s comfortable lounges and also tables that will fit bigger groups. You can buy a number of curated tasting paddles, which is a nice way to enjoy the bar. Just be ready for crowds on weekend nights.
Hands down best bar in Sydney. Cosey, welcoming and amazing drinks. Could not recommend this place anymore. And to top it off, they pour the best pint of Guinsses in town.
Best bar I've been in a long time! I will be back shortly. Boutique stylish bar in the heart of the rocks. It is the meaning of hidden gem!
Such a gem that is hidden, quite literally, away in the rocks. Loved the atmosphere / vibe of the place.
A fine pint of Guinness and some lovely Irish tunage. Giddy up!!!!
Beautiful little boutique bar hidden inside the Rocks. Great history about this place where you can just feel it exploring the rooms within. I also like the outdoor area though limited.
Good chatty customer services who know how to drink and serve!
Where to start? This place is an absolute gem of a whiskey bar. Partially underground in the heart of The Rocks, with some of the best service I ve ever received. Great selection of drams and a bar crew that can knock up and perfect almost any cocktail. Highly Recommend for any whiskey and small bar fan!
Fantastic bar and one of my must-visits in Sydney! Amazing whiskey selection, wonderful cocktails, and thoughtful, attentive staff who clearly love their work. What more could you want? Live music? They have that too! I haven't seen a place like this outside of Dingle.
We have visited this gem of a bar a few times now, it's a great place for a drink and to catch up with friends. Well worth a visit to this underground bar in the Rocks.
Amazing food, kind bouncer, knowledgeable bar staff
Great service with some of the friendliest and entertaining staff. Peter and Evo made my date and I feel extremely welcomed and were very knowledgable, we had a blast would recommend to anyone!
Was awesome, had my speed dating experience there.
Great cosy area with a fireplace. Has a wide selection of scotches, but also a nice selection of cocktails and small amount of nice beer. Attentive staff are fantastic!
Good food and special wines, Alex and columbs are very good manager
Cozy small place for drinks with friends, workmates or a date. Loads of different rooms with different seating options. Drinks are reasonably priced and as its a whiskey bar they have lots on selection including non-whiskey and non-alcoholic drinks.
What a wonderful whiskey bar. When visiting The Rocks, be sure to stop here for a sample of the best whiskeys from around the world. The service is very good and the pricing is very reasonable also
We were served by Robert. Outstanding service. His knowledge of what he was serving was second to none. Highly recommended.
Awesome authentic Irish pub. Locals come here regularly and play Irish music and sing songs. Gets crowded after 7:00pm. Great price on Guinness.
A charming warm hideaway bar in heart of the rocks, that oozes with class and character. Dripping with ambience filled off the cuff trad music that Echoes throughout its walls that pumps it's heartbeat. This is where one can hide aways for a few lost hours or indulgence in a few fine blended whiskeys with beautiful hand crafted Cristal clear icecubes. A must for anyone with a taste for the fear
Really nice chilled out bar, staff know there whiskey well.
One of the best heritage bars in Sydney! Even better is the irish music session on Sunday night's, fantastic musicians.
Really good selection, very attentive staff. I always recommend this place because I know the staff are consistently good. Thanks for ensuring our evening was really relaxed and provided a place for us siblings to get together.
Seemed to only care about pleasing their Irish friends. Cool setting but that s about it. The staff weren t friendly at all especially compared to other whisky bars in Sydney. The selection of whisky is good but nothing amazing. Cocktails were great but once again, you can get just as good if not better at other places in the area.
Getting a drink is a nightmare too. Took 30 minutes to get a drink with only 1 person making drinks while having 3 or 4 people behind the bar. To make matters worse, the bartender kept serving anyone with an Irish accent first regardless of who had been waiting first.
With the competition in bars (especially whisky bars) available at the moment, this place seems to be relying on its building setting rather than its customer service and organisation and because of that, I won t be going back.
One of the best in Sydney. Great atmosphere. Live music as well which is becoming something of a rarity.
Cozy place, nice atmosphere, great service and drinks were on point.
Great atmosphere, very attentive, professional and knowledgeable staff, and one of the best whisky menus in Sydney. Two enthusiastic thumbs up!
One of the best bars in Sydney in my opinion. The history (sitting in one of the oldest sandstone buildings in Sydney), the drinks and the staff are all top quality.
Come for one of the 15+ cocktails, stay for the 8 page whiskey menu
This place is crazy good!
From the understated entrance that gives a "speak easy' feel, the knowledgeable staff who know their whisky from their whiskey, to the underground location, low ceiling, awesome music and vibe of the place... It's just works. Totally.
Beautiful venue.
Rude staff and very slow bar service.
great place for a drink after work, really like those candles
The Doss House has enormous potential. A great location serving an exquisite range of whisky and other drinks.
Unfortunately, the service was terrible. Just appalling.
Drinks took forever to be delivered. The service was either constantly hovering or no where to be seen. There is a balance which eludes the Doss House.
Maybe next time it will be better. Maybe.
Love this place, warm and cosy. Great drinks and service. History Through Whiskey event was amazing. Definitely recommended.
A little whiskey bar tucked away in The Rocks with an extensive collection of whiskeys and rum. I'm a novice when it comes to whiskeys, but the staff here are so informative and friendly. The venue is full of history and the art and decor complements it all very well. Highly recommend coming here for a cheese platter to go with drinks. The lighting near the back is very dim so we were mostly drinking by candle light, but it suited the mood very well.
I have been several times and love the different rooms, from the beautiful bar stocked with an amazing selection of whiskeys to the lounge areas. It s a cosy place with lots of character and the staff are great. Also loving the live music .. big thumbs up
Really good place! I totally recommend to go and check because probably you'll be back ;)
The lovely Irish woman who currently owns it is doing a fantastic job. Pint of Guinness was fantastic
This bar can fit a maximum of 100 people and there are many who are turned away. The spot of the old puppet shop at the Rocks this pub does not disappoint. The different rooms are small but offers different ambience in each room. Sunday s seems to be the day when people randomly sings a ballad or two, it is fun. Try their whisky sours -whisky cocktails are their speciality.
Visit on a Sunday for lively Irish folk music and great cocktails
Simply amazing. Such a cool vibe in this underground escape. You can truly forget the outside world exists after entering this rabbit warren of a venue. Whiskey range is impressive, the staff are knowledgeable and friendly (thanks Alex) and there's a variety of different places to perch yourself (at the bar, in a comfy couch, on tables outside) and sample the delicious charcuterie offerings. Also, one of the best Guinesses on tap in Sydney! Loved it!
Third best pickled grapes I've had in my life. 7/7 would recommend. Always smiling when serving negroni. Nice.
.
Great little hidden bar. Live acoustic music, low ceilings and generally cozy vibe.
Best new bar in Sydney. Surreal experience in old sandstone rooms with low ceilings. Fees like you're in another time. Great service and very friendly staff.
The new Hero of Waterloo..... best hidden bar in Sydney! Beautiful interiors great cocktails!
