This place should not be called a "Tavern". It's a classy, upscale restaurant. Not that it sucked or anything, but the prices and atmosphere was not what my group of drinking buddies were prepared for. We didn't stay long.

I have had dinner and happy hour many times- always good and occasionally outstanding. I believe the breakfast is underrated. The house made donuts and hash are excellent. I know it shouldn't matter, but I love the coffee cups here!

it's happy hour, taste as many aps as possible and grab a few featured drink, have a solid business meeting with a relaxed feel with formal influences. Try their featured Pot Pie or pretty much anything from the wood fired oven. Go here.

What a great place for breakfast! (I didn't get a chance to try lunch or dinner during my trip.)

I was very impressed by the breakfast menu selection, flavor, and freshness. Some of the best brisket I've every had (hope they keep it on the menu).

Warm atmosphere and cozy seating.

Friendly and helpful staff.

Great location.

Went here tonight and was not impressed, they have a nice atmosphere hence the 2 stars. I paid for their $21 risotto dish and it was bland, absent of much flavor and for a $21 dish it was a serious disappointment, it was way over priced for the quality in which I recieved. It is unlikely I will return to this place, not in the mood to gamble my money away on sub par food. I cook for a living and sadly I would have rather spent my time making my own risotto that I could enjoy.

Red Star is always great. Good place to have a whiskey and nibble at happy hour, and the dinner is always excellent. Great "business casual" vibe without being overwhelming. Staff is great, especially the bartenders.

I recently came around the Red Star Tavern and had their steak and egg entree. The service at this establishment is not always constant. I appreciate that management is always present to greet the guests. The food always good and hot, and service is always timely.

Wait staff was very slow, food tasted great. Prices very pricey, coffee was luke warm, manager was a liar. Ladies room floor was filthy. And 2 of the toilets out of 4 were clogged and not in service. Daniel the cook was very friendly and brought our food to us before it got cold.

This was a fun place to go, however it isn't a must stop place in Portland. We were given a gift card to here, which was the only real reason why we stopped there. The food was good, the atmosphere was nice. However, nothing really jumped out to us. It was just a restaurant that could have used a little more character and draw.

Large but cozy space with a full bar. I actually came for breakfast, which was quite satisfying. The salmon Lox plate was good, as were the eggs. My only warning is that the coffee and OJ which was offered when we first sat down are by no means free, but actually rather expensive.

Huge disappointment. The menu is limited. The food lacks flavor, even though they attempt to add flare to their plates with unique pairings. The only redeeming quality was the relaxed, atmosphere.

This I an upscale place but kid friendly. Been here a couple times and the food melts in your mouth! The head chef prepares their own menu for the day at a set price for 3 courses and dessert or you can choose from other dishes on the menu. Reservations are recommend on the weekends for a party of more than 2. Alcoholic drinks are well made. Relaxed/ romantic setting with dim lighting.

We eat here every time we're in Portland. Never disappointed. The menu always has what we like and more. ! Fresh, locally grown and prepared and cooked very well. The bar is probably the best in Portland. Modern with that good down home touch. Like the city. Red Star has been a go to for us over 5 years now.

One of the better happy hours in town! Every single day from 4p-8p; how can you beat that? Their drinks are delicious, the service is always great and the food items (even the cheap ones) are usually quite filling.

I've also been in for brunch a couple of times and left really satisfied.

Next try - their dinner menu.

My sons and I stopped in for a quick bite in this place. It seemed there was one waitress running the whole floor. Took a good while for her to tell us we can sit where ever. Finally, we got to order at some point and since "the ticket wasn't printed" the food was late. My "medium steak" was the rarest I've had. My kid's well done steak was burned very well and the meat had a weird aftertaste. All that wouldn't still make me give one star review but we spent the night in an ER with severe vomiting and diarrhea and diagnosed with food poisoning. Of course, I can't tell for sure their food was the reason (50/50 between this and another food we had) but given what we went through, I can't not mention this.

Best Manhattan in Portland. I know what you're thinking. It's just a hotel bar. But I don't know of another bartender who appreciates the finer points of the conjugation of bourbons and red vermouths better than Brandon.

Went during happy hour. Amazing service and amazing food. Bourbon and whiskey selection is wide and diverse, appetizers/happy hour options are well priced and filling, and dessert was the perfect end to dinner.

Excellent establishment that has stood the test of time. I'm so happy that I can come here after a year's time or more and be greeted by an excellent bartender who can make quality manhattans and old fashions. The burger is delicious too.

I attend a bi-weekly business luncheon in the Red Star Club Room. The food is always wonderful. They prepare a nice variety of cuisines. I like enjoy happy hour and dinner in the main restaurant as well. Their Chef prides himself on using local ingredients close to Portland. As a small farmer and rancher I appreciate the effort to source local ingredients. Keep up the good work!

We live downtown, were out shopping and wanted dinner. Looked on Open Table and found that Red Star had tables every 15 minutes. We were half a block away so just walked right over. Restaurant was all but empty but we were told that there was no availability and we could eat in the bar. I respectfully expressed surprise given openings on Open Table and stood there and made a reservation right then and there. We were surprised by the rudeness displayed especially by the hostess, and hurt that someone, especially at a business, would treat others with such rudeness and dismissiveness. We walked over to Jake's Grill and spent $200 on dinner and a bottle of wine and tipped our customary 25%. We will never return to Red Star again.

We stopped in here for a few apps and beers. They had a fun selection of food, drinks, and beer. Everything was delicious!! This city is perfect for walking and making frequent stops to sample the fare. I highly recommend!

Friendly service, but couldn't eat there last time I visited. The whole menu was meat. Waitress offered to work with me, but just seemed like a pain. They removed the hummus plate from the menu so there was just nothing to order that was vegetarian or vegan friendly. Friend and I got a glass of wine and left.

What's to say, it's Red Star, it's been the same thing for years, not saying it's bad or they do something wrong, it's just the same ol'. Drinks are overpriced but I'm so sure, so is their rent. Food is standard downtown PDX fare, nothing stands out and not much fails. It's basic stuff for basic business district fare.

Be there early because what you can enjoy will be one of downtown's under-appreciated happy hours. Great small plates as well well constructed drinks, the Red Star is a solid place to have an early meal.

I really liked this place. A little on the expensive side but the food was worth it. I had the steak salad and I ate the thing in about 5 mins. Mmm, the dressing was not over done and the steak was cooked to almost perfection. Salad also came with blue cheese, radish, and apples. It was a great mixture and I suggest you get it. Sorry, I cannot remember the dressing. Drinks were strong . Place was clean, you can watch them cook and a great atmosphere. Enjoy!

An incredible environment with a direct and spectacularly focused menu. Flavor and style combined with impeccable service. Go anywhere else downtown Portland then come here and see what nobody else can do. We've had the charcuterie, the poached shrimp, the summer melon salad and the apricot chicken. All were perfect and all were exactly as described.

Rude host after about five minutes of waiting at the front counter. I know they see me because he is over talking to the chef, I'm clearly in their line of site. I get a phone call and go outside to take it. When I come back in it's another few minute wait, I am looking at the menu at the front when he comes up and ask me "are you going to be eating here today." I said im not sure I'm trying to find something on the menu. Then he turns to walk away. I realize this doesn't sound very bad it was more the attitude about it you could feel the eye roll when he turned around. There was no curtisy of "did you have and questions" can I seat you" i really don't need to be anywhere I'm looked down on. So I left I wish I could of tried the food and given a review on that but the rude host was enough for me to never go back. Sad part it's the restrarunt of the hotel we are staying in.

Stayed at the hotel awhile ago, before the lockdown, and happy hour was okay and wouldve given 3 or 4 stars. However, breakfast the next morning was horrible. Food was okay but the service bad. And by bad, really horrendous. Id love to go into it but for the sake of brevity enjoy your meal somewhere else.

A little pricey but omg, the ribeye was to die for! Try the roasted chicken too - even the white beans and hamhocks side is out of this world yummy. It's attached to Hotel Monaco where we stayed so a late dinner here was somewhat impromptu and turned into a pleasant surprise.

Super slow service. Took awhile for anyone to seat us and it wasn't due to a line or the place being crowded. Then, our waiter took so long to come by our booth, pretty much the entire time. He was, however, much more attentive to his other table, which was annoying. The food didn't disappoint thankfully- we had the pork chop and the snapper-but the cocktails we tried were a bit watered down.

Terrible customer service at the get go. Very rude hostess and waitress on Christmas Eve. Have gone many times in the past ten years and remember it being great (coincidentally not for a few years though). This business owner needs to realize how poorly customers are being treated. I took my business elsewhere and will never return.
