Could not be better. Top performance from Joel Paterson's trio with a nice selection of jazz and blues tunes. The place is a wonderful reminder of the era that it was built. You know it it from the minute you get inside and smell the air. The stuff was friendly and polite. Nice drinks and prices too. A "must visit" if you like jazz/blues live music , good drinks and lovely people.

Great old world feel, cool staff and exceptional gypsy jazz on the night we visited. "No talking" required during performance, much appreciated! Decent beer selection. Beware- cash only, although they do have an ATM.

Authentic live music (jazz this night) venue- and that's great, but if you're into talking, dancing, small amounts of personal space, and basically having a fun night out, maybe not the best spot for you. Hard core jazz theorist, tightly packed, mustache wax enthusiasts kind of place.

Top notch jazz listening lounge. They get some of the world's best jazz acts and also have a wide array of upcoming and extremely talented cats who come into town or have residency's. Prices for entry are always affordable and the sound is usually pretty good. Come early if you want a table, but even if you don't get one, you'll be treated nicely and have drinks brought to you by the a waitress. That said, drinks are pricey, so unless you're okay with well, then get ready to spend a lot on alcohol. But first and foremost, Green Mill is about listening to and enjoying jazz, and they nail this.

I do like the fact that they actively try to keep the patrons quiet, and the musicians are top notch--especially the regulars--, but I do think that they take themselves a little too seriously. A little civility can go a long way. Still, if you want to be blown away by authentic musicality and musicianship you'd be hard pressed to find better.

A Chicago icon. Saw a blind guy playing a Hammond organ, and he was SICK! Crowd was a lot of fun. The decor is gorgeous and creates a really unique, classy atmosphere. Warning: they mix their drinks strong!

This place has lots of character and great music (I saw Jimmy Cobbs as part of a jazz quartet) but be warned that they take their music seriously: the bouncers will sshhh you if you talk during the performance. Also it is cash only - no credit cards accepted.

The best jazz venue in Chicago. A wide variety of jazz is played here every night. You will have a great time - as long as you follow the house rules. Mon, Wed, Fri and Sat 9/8PM shows are supposed to be quiet - you will get shhhhhed if you talk loud. ;)

This is a Chicago classic for a reason. The ambiance and quality of entertainment is amazing -- and why people go. The walls are real wood carvings with awesome lighting embedded; the music is remarkable on any given night, even mid-week. It's not a place to go to talk loudly with friends -- usually the music is the focus -- but if you like live music and fabulous ambiance -- YES.

The music was out of this world! The waitress on the other hand, had some room for improvement. Out of the 4 people at our table she took one drink order at a time since she wasn't patient enough for us to announce our orders. She just seemed generally rude, and after a while it was easier to just go to the bar.

Nice little bar. We had a good time, few drinks and a live jazz band. It wasn't crowed at all (it was on ester Sunday). Not sure why we got charged $10 cover charge a person (to get in or because of the band. I do hope because of the band). We are visiting Chicago and this bar came up because of supposedly Capone used to hang out here and it was few minutes from where we staying. I was surprised they weren't trying to advertising and capitalizing on Capone.

I don't care who has been there, or how famous the place is, or if the jazz is really good; you don't charge 12 $ just to stand, and - most of all - you don't answer rudely when one asks if that is valid also for students. Other places have more respect for student backpackers and do not charge them to listen to some good music (see Kingston Mines for instance). However, I might have found the worst usher ever, so this is just a warning: think twice before going all the way there.

I went to this place last week and it was definitely a really good experience. We had a get together and chose this place. Its a great place to come for a beer! The drinks are pretty good and well-priced. Some of the stuff on this menu is really good. Every city needs a spot like this!

I just read someone else's account about a grumpy woman basically pulling the stool from under her and told her she was in the way. Same exact thing happened to me only when my sister and I moved to a table in the back, she basically told us that if more people came in she was going to put them at our table, even though there were two tables completely open on either side of us. And the drink prices were steep. Not much bigger than a shot glass margarita cost 8.50 and Shiltz bottled beer was 4. Loved the poetry and the place, but would not recommend it unless staff changes.

I always recommend the Green Mill to friends coming in from out of town to get a taste of what Chicago is all about. The Green Mill has history (the piano behind the bar sits on top of a trap door that leads to a speakeasy and escape tunnels - note: these are not accessible), it has a good beer list and drink menu, but most importantly it is legendary for its weekly poetry slam nights on Sundays. The hosts of Poetry Slam night always make you feel like you belong even if it's your first time there.

Beautiful dark old Chicago bar with great woodwork and light fixtures. Saw the free Paper Machete show at 3p, really entertaining. It's a bar only, there is no food FYI. Highly recommend this place.

Best jazz club in the country. Come for the second and third sets (usually after 10:30 or so), after the "respectable" people go home. You'll have great seating, sound, views, and a great time. Come Fridays for the after-hours sessions that last nearly until dawn. This is the kind of place that only a world-class city can offer. Life is short. Don't miss it.

Probably the worst service ever and by far not the experience I was hoping for. Both the guy at the bar and the one who shows you to your seat are complete jerks. Music was good but I never felt any fun in Patricia Barber's performance. The other members of the trio did seem to have a good time. As such I don't have any problem staying silent during the show (a rule that obviously doesn't apply to the barmen - they made as much noise as possible). I didn't feel at a single moment the joyful atmosphere of a jazz joint. Plenty of other/better places to go in Chicago.

This is one of the best jazz clubs in Chicago if not the world. My brother put it best during a recent visit, "we are hearing maybe the best live jazz music on the planet right now". Old school cool vibe and staff is mostly great

We came here as a small group because of the jazz performance that was going on in the night. The place is dimmly lit and has a chill vibe to it. It all felt comfortable and a great place to socialize. The jazz artists were great too. The drinks are averaged priced and I'm not sure if they offer food options. I would definitely recommend this place on jazz nights.

On of the coolest, classic and historic jazz clubs in Chicago. Check out the booth Al Capone sat in, take a seat, enjoy a beverage and bathe in the fantastic music. This place is all cash so leave the credit cards and e-pay world behind. Bring your Benjamin's and Hamilton's or stay home . One important note, there is lots of crowd standing. So if you don't get a seat in the stage area, your view could be blocked by those standing, but if you are there to listen to the music, it will not really matter. I really loved the place you should too.

Place is not busy at 3pm on Sundays. Juke book is great if you know the artists. I didn't. Bartenders are solid. There's a trap door where Allen Capone used to hide but now it's a fart dungeon.

CROWDED CROWDED CROWDED! Don't park across the street because the Chinese food place will tow you for $196. Couldn't even get service so we don't know how the food or the drinks were but they charged us $12 a person to stand there elbow to elbow with a crowd of other people! Felt like the subway during rush hour. The plus side is that the Jazz was good but you REALLY need to LOVE Jazz to go through that ordeal!

Some friends and I went on an early Friday evening when there were still a few empty tables. The bartenders were very skilled in classic cocktails. There was a great performer at this early time and the entire experience had this time capsule feel.

We went here to enjoy the historic venue. We arrived at 5 p.m. at the end of a rock show. It was incredibly loud and not my kind of rock music. I've been to hundreds of Rock shows in clubs and would not recommend listening to a rock band in this venue . The Acoustics were terrible for a loud rock show . Staff were rude and disorganized. The drink prices were reasonable and we enjoyed the venue for about an hour. I would have to go back for a jazz show to really be able to evaluate this historic venue.
