$15 cover per person and the management staff kept hushing and hissing at all the patrons. Not a good place to go if you want to socialize and talk with friends while enjoying the music as well. They want it as quiet as a library while the music plays. Was annoyed beyond belief. I don't expect it to be loud but don't expect not to be social at all either.

Had a blast here but it s really a shame how awful the bartenders and servers are. I ve never had bar tenders as rude as the ones at The Green Mill. On multiple occasions I witnessed the male bar tender get into arguments with patrons while they were ordering drinks. Unfortunately I don t really see the costumer service getting better because the staff know that they will always be packed and busy because of the history of the bar. If this wasn t Capone s old bar, this place would fail due to how they treat their guests.

Gorgeous interior and very welcoming atmosphere. will definitely be going again. One critique of the open mic slam night, it seemed odd that all the poets were white- at a jazz club- in Chicago. Perhaps these were the only people that signed up that night but maybe they should do more outreach to people of different races. Just a thought.

Great funky bar. We were there on Jazz, poetry and comedy night. Very cool entertainment. Lots of regulars interacting with the entertainers. 'Most fun I had a a bar in years. Highly recommended! (Get there early for a good seat).

***Cash Only***

If you're looking for great jazz music along with the speak easy feel of the 30s, this is the place to go. Also, bring cash, no credit cards accepted.

Did I mention Al Capone was a frequent patron?

The Saturday afternoon satirical troupe Paper Machete has always proven to be a thought-provoking and at times rip-roaring laughter event. Every Edition has a new first-time performer and the musical groups vary from comedic to somber. I encourage everyone to get into the Green Mill, but it is a" no talking during the performance" show so don't expect to go in and gab with your friends.

You must visit this place at least once in your life. Be prepared to be silent during performances, this place takes jazz seriously. It appears to have not changed since being owned by Al Capone. Top notch.

This place brings me back in time. I feel like I'm stepping back into the 20s...soothing jazz...people dancing...speakeasy feel. You can't beat it. Everyone needs to experience the green mill.

coming from the city where jazz was born, this place isn't crazy special. still had a good time listening to some good traditional jazz, new orleans style. I would have rated this higher but my complaint is about the bar and our waitress. She had a pretty limited knowledge about classic cocktails one would expect to order in a classic jazz club, so it was like speaking a different language to her. She got flustered, and kind of came off snotty from her lack of knowledge and had that mood the rest of the night. I just wish they had a wait staff who seemed like they enjoyed being there. One thing is for sure, though this is a jazz club, wait staff in new orleans are much less snotty, and a ton more knowledgable about anything classic, either drinks or jazz.

There's a unique vibe with incredible energy in this cozy, historic bar. The Uptown Poetry Cabaret show is an especially great show. There's a reason why it's been happening every Sunday night for 32 years.

It was a Friday night, the city is cold and the jazz is warm, we stepped inside. On a busy night don't expect to get a great seat right away. Green Mill is a place without cocktail menus and reservations. You come in and sit at a booth, unable to see more than a glimpse of the musician, but you hear his work. Give it 30 minutes and you'll find yourself at the bar, and you'll feel the glory of this place.

Come for the booze and music, and stay for the music and booze. The Mill is legit. Save the chitchat for later and get those toes tapping. Don't miss Paul Marinaro if you're a visitor and wondering what Chicago sounds like.

Great ambiance and good music.

Great ambiance and good music.
That's all the positives though.
Bartenders were rude, slow, and forgetful. It took multiple attempts to order drinks while sitting bar-side. Bartenders also weren't able to make any mixed shots because they "didn't have ingredients" or had "never heard of that before". A rude staff member cut the band off early and told everyone to "down" their drink and "get out".
Our whole group was very excited to check out this historic venue and left disappointed. We will not be back.

It's a beautiful venue with good swing music. However the door person was very miserable and the female bar tender very rude. When I asked if they had a cocktail menu she sounded annoyed and said no ( That's strange for a cocktail bar not having a cocktail menu). When I ordered a Mai Tai she said " It's like ordering a steak at McDonald's " . I still ordered it and it was simply terrible. There a small dance floor if you know how to swing dance..

Great ambiance for a chill drink on a Saturday afternoon. I've gone here for their Paper Machete show which had a great combination of wit, humor, and Colbert-esque satire. Drinks were great quality for the price. Booths super comfy and overall good atmosphere to enjoy with friends.

We had awesome time - the band, the music and the atmosphere were great. You can feel the old jazz times in every cm in this place. We paid $8 at the entrance, for the band on Thursday. The place can easily accommodate about 40-60 people.
