National) is a nature reserve of 7,800 km2 located in East Africa and extending from the Virunga Mountains in the south to the Ronsury Mountains in the north, where it borders the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, the Ronsury Mountains National Park and the King Elizabeth National Park in Uganda. Virunga National Park was established in 1925, making it the first national park in African history. It was also designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Nevertheless, the wildlife in the park has recently become vulnerable to serious dangers and threats as a result of the civil war that took place in the area and the intense illegal hunting that takes place in its aftermath. The park is currently managed by the Congolese National Park authorities, assisted by the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation.
