I had been really excited about visiting Taj as they have been doing excellent marketing leading up to their opening. I wish other Victorian restaurants would follow their lead and market to get their name out there. The ambience of Taj is on point. I loved the decoration, the TV playing Indian music videos, and the music. They are using technology to their advantage to improve efficiency - iPads for waiters and earpieces for all employees. The waitresses are a bit awkward and inexperienced, but we received good service. They weren't offering the full menu as it was the day before the grand opening, but that was fine. I ordered paneer tikka masala (mild) and my husband ordered dal makhani (medium). The paneer tikka masala had a pretty good flavor, but contained large chunks of green bell pepper, though the menu didn't indicate this ingredient for this particular dish (but it did for others). I realize every place does tikka masala differently so now I know that it's not as creamy here. The flavor was good. However, my husband's dal makhani had no flavor at all. It just tasted like cooked lentils. I think they may have forgotten to add salt and some other ingredients. We went to India last year and enjoyed so much amazing dal makhani there so I was a bit disappointed since this place had been hyped up so much. I am just hoping it was a fluke since they were focusing on preparing for the grand opening. I am still giving the place 4 stars hoping they will read this review and reevaluate the dal makhani recipe. I would definitely give them another chance as I really do like the place and appreciate all the effort they are putting into it.
