The Old University was built in a 23-year construction period from 1712 to 1735 according to the plans of the baroque architect Johann Adam Breunig. The building replaced a college building of the university, which was located here. The construction project was part of the reconstruction of the city of Heidelberg, which was badly destroyed in the Palatinate War of Succession (1688 1697). The building was named - Domus Wilhelmiana - after its founder, the Elector Elector Johann Wilhelm. On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of Heidelberg University in 1886, the old auditorium in the west wing of the building was redesigned in the style of the Neo-Renaissance. The name Old University, which is common today, came at the beginning of the 1930s as a result of the construction of the New University lecture hall building on the opposite side of the University Square.
