For a city with such a large Asian population there is a disappointing number of good Chinese restaurants in Manchester, even in Chinatown itself. Most offer up the same overly sweet, greasy, MSG-filled dishes that us English just can't get enough of.

Yang Sing is a little gem though, or a big gem as it happens, as it is huge inside with tables spread across two or three floors. The menu is quite big and can be intimidating but the staff couldn't be more friendly and are there to guide you through the dishes and answer any questions you may have.

My girlfriend and I visited on Valentine's Day and ate from a special set menu for the romantic evening. The dim sum was simply the best I've ever had, they melted in your mouth and were packed with incredible flavour, although I wasn't fond of the cuttle fish. We also had a jellyfish salad which is something I would have never normally ordered but was delicious. The best dish though was the beef in whisky sauce. The meat and sauce were brought to the table separately and the dish was finished at the table, providing a bit of theatre for the main course. The beef was perfectly cooked and the sauce was beautifully rich.

We haven't yet been back to Yang Sing but we're certainly overdue another visit and would highly recommend it.
