The fortress on the Thames originating from the Norman Conquest (1066) was a royal residence and has since had many functions, most notably as a prison. Unfortunately it is now overrun with tour groups, and despite the massive profits the visitor experience has not been improved accordingly. The educational and entertainment value is low. Apart from the entrance queue, there s a lot of queuing for the individual attractions. The worst is of course for the Crown Jewels a tasteless and vulgar collection presented in an atmosphere of absurd pomposity and royalist propaganda.
