The original Bodhi Tree, according to local belief...

The original Bodhi Tree, according to local belief, was cut down by wife of Emperor Ashoka because she was jealous of the time he devoted at his Buddhist devotion. The emperor then revived the tree by nurturing its roots with tons of milk, and made a protective stone railing around it. The tree that stands today is said to come from the same stock as the original tree. Mahinda, son of Ashoka, took a sapling from original tree to Sri Lanka on one of his missions and tree flourished there and its sapling was later brought back to be planted at Bodh Gaya after original tree died.
