Visiting Palo Verde takes nearly an hour-long drive on the worst road we experienced in Costa Rica, albeit the countryside is beautiful. The lagoon straddling the park is surely the world's largest mosquito breeding pond, hence the cloud of them that followed us despite hefty doses of DEET; interestingly enough, the constant swarm of mosquitos was infused with a swarm of dragonflies. The hiking trails were in very rough shape with obstacles and debris, but admittedly we didn't last long under the crush of mosquitos and had to retreat to the car to nurse the countless bites. Terribly disappointing park, but glad some other reviewers found it enjoyable, even if I can't imagine how. Overall Costa Rica is a beautiful country and some of their other parks are excellent.
