My husband and I reside in Vermont, are frequent visitors to Salem, and were very excited to meet friends from out of state in town to share with them one of our favorite places, which unfortunately included an incredibly disconcerting attempt on our part to treat them to lunch at The Tavern located inside the Hawthorne. We waited for at least fifteen minutes outside the restaurant that, upon examination, only seemed to be at roughly half its seating capacity. No host or hostess was there to even speak about dining and when I attempted to catch the attention of wait staff I was looked at, ignored. The staff behind the bar ignored us until I approached and asked if there was a host or hostess working as we were hoping to be seated for lunch. I was curtly informed there was a host on duty, that they d be with me in a few minutes. All in all we waited 15-20, finally just walked out. Awful and truly embarrassing experience.
