The Supreme Court is the body that heads the hierarchy of the judiciary and is the highest judicial institution of the State of Israel. The main functions of the Supreme Court are a hearing on appeals against rulings handed down by the District Court, and a hearing in the High Court of Justice as a first instance.

The Supreme Court currently has 15 judges, elected by the Judicial Selection Committee. The tenure of a Supreme Court justice continues until his retirement at the age of 70, unless he ceases to serve previously. The current president of the Supreme Court is Justice Miriam Naor, and the vice president is Justice Elyakim Rubinstein. The number of cases discussed by the Supreme Court judges ranges between 9,500 and 11,500 annually [1].
