I love my doctors who work out of JFK and I am incredibly grateful for their expertise as I am a heart patient. My recent surgery, however, was incredibly traumatic due to the pre-op nurse assigned to me. I told her I had hand trauma and was terrified of having a tube in it. She grabbed my hand and punishingly tried to jam it in anyway. I screamed and cried. The anesthesiologist had to take over. After a few minutes the nurse had the gall to ask have you calmed down now? I said no I had not. There is so many things I wished I d said to her, but when we are scared and vulnerable we often lose our voice to our captors. Some nurses are so loving, like my overnight nurse who breathed with me holding my hand through a panic attack. The overnight gentleman who offered care and dignity helping me to the bathroom was so kind. It s a shame that the pre-op nurse is the one who made the biggest impression as she caused another notch in my belt for traumatic healthcare experiences.
