The problem is not Lake Conroe's water levels, it'...
The problem is not Lake Conroe's water levels, it's the incompetence of the people running SJRA (and their constant lies). They caused problems that never occurred before and they should not be allowed to manage the lake. For decades the lake was fine and nonbody experienced this issue before as they had better management. So let's recap Harvey:
SJRA does zero pre-release. During the storm, they release almost nothing the entire time. When the storm essentially stopped raining in Lake Conroe (permanently -- clear skies) and when Kingwood is experiencing the maximum flooding, they decide to open all the gates and the water went down from 6' or so above normal to almost normal levels in hours!!!!
Normally, they do a control release in which you are releasing a steady amount of water constantly over a long duration (starting before the storm comes, during the storm and for week or two afterwards). They did all of it instantly right as the sun appears! SJRA needs to be removed from running the Lake and Houston should take direct charge of it and use Lake Conroe for an emergency only supply of water (they should not be giving Montgomery County all the water).
Lake Conroe should return to the 201 normal water level or even 202 as they had it at times in the past for entire year. Lake Conroe is designed for Houston during extreme droughts (like we had before Harvey) as an emergency source of water. SJRA is selling all of Houston's emergency water or releasing it. We need to think about preserving Lake Conroe and Houston's emergency supply, not thinking about how people at SJRA can make more money and blame everyone else but themselves for all the problems they are causing people including high water prices, spending money on projects no one needs/wants, overbilling people and lying to the public.
They just need competent, educated people to run the water levels off of facts, not political views or trying to mask their incompetence. SJRA's incompetence causes all the problems. They should have done a steady release that was constant starting at the beginning or since the storm was over, hold the water and release it slowly (it was literally sunny every day after they released all the water). They need to be sued for all the damage they are causing to everyone.
