I met the director and got a tour. This amazing school was once far ahead of public schools in care of students when it was founded. Nowdays it is an alternative mostly for smaller classes and for autistic students who need the most restrictive environment. In SDUSD it's third level of care and they make sure the student belongs there before they pay for it. Some families pay the tuition and send their student if they qualify. They also offer care for students with psychological challenges but I don't know about the program. I was happy to see that public schools have caught up with them (Stein was founded in the 70s) if well funded and good news, our district is. Still, the staff are amazing and programs like animal interactions (horses) as therapy are unique to Stein. They dismiss at 1pm so they have shorter days. I have four children on the autism spectrum and our community has nothing but praise for this school.
