While you can't go into the back country, you can tour the Villa Philmont built by Waite Phillips in the 1920s before he donated the land to the Boy Scouts and visit the Rayado camp that was a homestead and stop along the Santa Fe trail. Then visit the Seton Museum. Before you leave stop at the Tooth of Time trading post at base camp to pick up outdoor gear or souvenirs. Best of all there is no cost for the tours. Make reservations before you go.
