In the film the shining, it shows how a hotel can drive a man to complete insanity. This hotel has the same ... charm .

Before I begin the main part of this review I must point out that each and every staff member we encountered was friendly, polite and helpful- the staff we met were faultless.

The hotel looks clean and pleasant from outside. Inside it shows a depressingly unloved existence. Tiles are cracked. Touchable surfaces worn away and tired. The hotel actually smelled like a derelict house when we arrived. The reception area was cold, tired and uninviting.

The lifts and corridors to the room continued the same theme. The carpets are dated and seem unclean. The fixtures and fittings all seemed about a decade older than they were when they first needed replacing. The corridor was literally filled with dirty, used room service trays that hadn t been collected and had been allowed to build up.

The room wasn t dirty, but neither was it clean. The bed was stained (see photo) and again, everything felt so beyond past its best . The bathroom wasn t clean, the shower curtain was an absorbent material and it was disgusting. The bath/shower was scratched and just seemed horrible.

The room itself had a window that was prevented from opening fully, presumably to stop the guests from leaping from the window due to disappointment in the hotel.

I m sure the hotel will find a home servicing unsavoury night time trades and encounters in its current state as it was fairly cheap. This is a shame because I can remember when, under previous management, this was an outstanding hotel that Wellington was lucky to have. Hence why I booked and was so let down.
