The prestigious institute was formerly known as the 'National Institute of Training in Industrial Engineering'. Later, the word 'Training' was removed and was rechristened 'National Institute of Industrial Engineering'. The institute, in its initial days, was spread across the country with knowledge centres situated in Hyderabad, Chennai, and Delhi. Gradually, during the late 1980s, all of these nodal centres were shut down and a single centre was formed, which is currently located at Mumbai. The institute is also engaged in applied research and offers professional consultancy services in various facets of management.
