I have been volunteering at a local animal shelter for a while now, so I know what to look for when it comes to a well-run organization. Dakin Humane Society is one of the best I've seen. The staff is passionate about their work and truly cares about the animals. The adoption process is smooth and efficient, and the animals are well-socialized.
