In May, 1964, the agreement was signed with General Electric Company of America to create 'Tarapur Atomic Power Station' or 'Tapes'. Later, the center was started in October 1964. Because of the limited time of communication, many equipment of the project was taken from the bullock cart to the place of the project! In April 1970, the project started producing full power capacity. This project is a special feature of the Boiler Water Reactor (BWR) system, using a uranium-235 or more pure uranium. Apart from the Soviet Union, there were only nuclear reactors in Asia that were located in Tarapur only.

In 1974, the technical assistance received from foreign companies was discontinued. After this, the project's continued progress with the help of scientists and indigenous companies of the country. Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) has been able to carry out the responsibilities such as fuel management and development, guidance for producing spare parts, and technical guidance. So, the country's first nuclear power plant was flourishing. Electricity is being generated at the rate of 80-95 paise per unit, and electricity is supplied to Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Although the Tarapur Atomic Energy Project, which has opened the source of nuclear power in the field of electricity, has come to fifty but still continues to function efficiently, and for some more years it will be the main source of affordable power generation and distribution. On October 28, 1969, electricity from this center started commercial production. So, on October 28 this year the project is entering fifty.

After independence, on 23 March 1948, the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru presented the Atomic Energy Bill in Parliament and it passed. By this, the Center has assembled the power of nuclear research and project making. The first nuclear power project was signed during his career. It was started in Lalbahadur Shastri's career and during the Indira Gandhi era, in 1969, the production of electricity started commercially from this center and in April 1970, it started producing 420 megawatts of full capacity. After the technical support of this project was stopped by foreign companies since 1974, the scientists of the country supported the project and its research. Therefore, this project has been underlining the unique ambience of both the political will and the zeal of the scientists.
