The University of Palermo was officially founded in 1806, but its early roots date back to 1498, when medicine and law were taught in Palermo. In the second half of the sixteenth century, Jesuit fathers were awarded degrees in the theology and philosophy of Massimo Al Casero College, They were expelled from the Kingdom of Sicily in 1767 by King Ferdinando I, and remained exiled 37 years before they returned to occupy their scientific and educational position again in the so-called Royal Academy.

After the unification of Italy, the University was modernized by the efforts of the Secretary of State for Arab Studies, Michele Amari. Since 1984, the office of the Rector has been the residence of the Chiramonti-Styri Palace, established in 1307, one of Palermo's most important historic buildings.
