I took my elderly father into the ER for what I suspected were flu symptoms. They ran the standard battery of tests including a chest x-ray because of his severe cough. On the plus side my dad was in and out quickly. On the negative side they failed to see the massive malignant tumors on his lungs and spine, they told him that his unbearable back and leg pain were because he needed to exercise more to strengthen his muscles and gave him ONE 200mg ibuprofen. They failed to notice that his liver enzymes were off the charts or that his high temperature was from the cancer cells flowing through his body through his lymph fluid. They ignored hematuria when they dipped his urine. However they were quick to note they felt he wasn t cleaning himself well enough and embarrass him while another patient was standing in the hall with the curtain left open. Maybe, oh I don t know, that was the cancer that was located in his brain making it so he couldn t think properly or perform all his activities of daily living to their satisfaction. Staff assumed everyone who came in with a cough had the flu and pushed them through their flu assembly line. Although it s not the job of the emergency room to diagnose such a severe illness, it is their job to not assume. The sign outside said emergency room , not flulike cough symptoms only room. The emergency room staff at HealthPark should feel ashamed of themselves. I ve never seen medical staff that was so quick to get rid of the patients and slap a flu label on them and shove them out the door.
