I go here on pilgrimage often. This mighty Romanesque Basilica is the mothership for American Catholicism. This holy place is rooted in a particular place and time, since it was started at the end of the 19th century and largely completed by the end of the second Vatican council. So it is equally influenced by, respectively, the popular piety of American Catholics, immigrants in particular, the liturgical movement, and the requirements of worship according to the principles of canon law after the Council of Trent.
Don't miss the charming Lourdes grotto or the tender and awe inspiring catacomb sanctuary. And don't forget, the possible indulgences you might gain by visiting here with the proper dispositions, and under the usual requirements!
