I am a volunteer at the State Library of Victoria so I've explored this place quite a lot. It's not a typical library because apart from reading rooms, it also has galleries, exhibitions and a good view of the dome. It's quite a friendly and inclusive place where everyone can visit without the need of tickets or membership cards. For Aussies, this place has a great collection regarding the history and culture as well as family histories in Victoria. Aussie visitors can find exhibits about Ned Kelly here. For visitors from other cultural backgrounds, the Cowen Gallery is particularly worth browsing, where you can see paintings depicting the old and modern Melbourne.
