We were staying at Rodanthe in June, 2020. As we often do, we were looking for a place to eat. When we go out, we normally spend over $200 as we take a rather large party.

This was just as the "second wave" of COVID had caused Dare county to tighten restrictions. Consequently, a sign was posted that all patrons must wear a mask if we could not practice social distancing.

As we waited, we noticed that there were a small number of tables, spaced far apart, and only a couple were occupied. The lady who greeted us informed us that we would still have to wear a mask just to walk to our table, even though we could be seated without coming within 6 feet of another table.

She went to get the table ready, and just before she finished, a short fellow came out and addressed us in a rather rude manner. He told us that we would NOT be seated in his establishment without a mask, in a very loud and unmannerly tone, creating a scene in front of the other patrons. They were staring at us as we stood there in disbelief.

We understood that the policy was not theirs, but we didn't deserve to be spoken to by that man that way. It was humiliating and embarrassing, and we turned and left without going to our table.

I guess he didn't want our money. I'll be sure to never give it to him in the future.

It all worked out for the best, however, because we ended up going to another establishment and enjoyed our dinner. We didn't have to wear a mask there, either.
