The singing was excellent, but the staging was almost a concert performance in costume - the great singers come, sing their pieces and walk off. Even the poor convicts had to disappear and the Flanders delegation were statists.
The three other Don Carlo performances I remember changed the scenery for each act, only returning to the tomb scene at the end. Is our LA Opera so poor that it cannot afford more imaginative stage settings ?
