First, I note that Selborne has secured the removal of several negative reviews, presumably by telling Google that they were defamatory. I have seen the reviews and do not believe them to be false: they were left by both instructing solicitors and members of the public, and indicated that selected tenants were unhelpful and unprepared. This largely adheres with my (and my firm s) experiences of the set.
I have tried to instruct Selborne before on a property disputes. The clerk was unhelpful and insisted on seeing the full set of instructions and papers to provide a quote. Normally, chambers give ballpark quotes on skeleton papers. After submitting these, I received an astronomical quote from a very junior tenant which was at least twice that provided by senior practitioners at more prestigious sets.
I would not even try to instruct them again. I am even less likely to do so upon seeing Selborne s desire to censure reviews, which suggests that the complaints have some credence.
