Can t help but think this place has lost focus in recent years. Its old name Tech Museum of Innovation was more about various hands-on tech exhibits and just random cool stuff for kids to explore. It was always a neat place to visit and had that cool 90s vibe (that s a good thing). Now they ve changed the name to The Tech Interactive and the museum has ironically moved away from being interactive to an actual museum, as its old name suggested. It s very mature now and doesn t really have that cool exploration vibe anymore. I remember how awesome it was to enter that massive atrium after buying tickets and looking up and down at the vast number of tech exhibits there were. They ve switched focus to fewer, large-scale exhibits which weirdly don t seem to have as much to do with tech. I support the initiative of renovating dated exhibits and even replacing old ones, but I m not sure the direction they ve gone is a good one. There s a lot of biology-related stuff and while that has a place in children s education, I don t think The Tech is where it should be taught.
In other, more simple terms, I d be much more excited as a kid to go to a museum where I could design my own roller coaster, race wheelchairs or experience an earthquake, than use augmented reality to view deconstructed human bodies through a tablet computer. The museum doesn t lack cool exhibits, mind you - it just does compared to what it had 10 years ago. It used to be wacky, with weird, random tech-related exhibits that kids could just run to and have the time of their lives. It seems like a lot of the exhibits they have today won t be appreciated by kids as much. I m just sad that along with the name change came a change in the focus of the museum as a whole.
