Neat free national park area located on a spit in south Hampton, Fort Monroe is an old military fort with a long history. The first Africans brought to America were landed here, Edgar Allan Poe, Lincoln, Jeff Davis, and Robert E. Lee were all here at sometime and in some capacity, too. Historic live oaks are planted all around, with a lighthouse nearby, and an impressive collection of buildings on the interior. Just a bit of a diversion from the HRBT and I-64, and certainly worth a visit. Cheers.
