I've used Local Muscle several times in the past, and have always recommend them highly -- until now. In fact, when I rented my 4th floor walk-up apartment, I even threw in an hour of their moving time as a renter's incentive. HOWEVER, the last experience I've had with them, and the experience of even trying to get someone to call me back about my concerns has been horrendous. Here's what happened:
1) I was moving out of the fourth-floor walk-up apartment (which Local Muscle moved me into a few years ago).
2) Because I needed to budget carefully, I meticulously wrote up an itemized list of every piece of furniture that would need to be moved. I also called and specifically requested that the estimate include four movers so they could do a relay-style move, like they did when they moved me in. This means one person on each of the three floors and one in the truck. This way, no one runs more than one flight of stairs and gets tired.
3) I purposefully overestimated the number of boxes and miscellaneous things. I said 75 boxes and on the day of the move (after everything was done) I got in writing from the movers that my list was correct and I did not have more than 75 boxes.
So, to summarize, I meticulously told them what needed to be moved, that it was a fourth-floor walk-up and that I wanted four people. They gave me an estimate. I said ok.
The day of the move came. Long story short:
1) The total cost was DOUBLE what they estimated
2) I have discovered that they piled many boxes marked "very fragile, keep on top" BENEATH boxes labeled "Books, very heavy." This has caused many things to break. Unfortunately, it's apparent that they just didn't read the labels on the boxes at all.
3) I have called twice after the move, asking to speak to someone. I got Gabe the first time, Maura the second. Gabe said he'd look into the issue, but it's now been a week and no one has called back.
Really sub-par and disappointing.
UPDATE: It's now been 8 months and the company never deigned to even call us back, so I'm reposting this from yelp to other review sites so all can be aware. We also discovered several items and boxes that were picked up from our original location were never unloaded, meaning items such as a newer A.C., a custom made quilt and family keepsakes were lost in addition to the broken items. It's really a shame that there seems to be zero accountability.
