About Maryland Historical Society
The Maryland Historical Society is a non-profit organization that aims to preserve and promote the rich history, art, and culture of Maryland. Established in 1844, the society has been at the forefront of collecting, preserving, and interpreting Maryland's past for over 175 years.
The society operates a museum that houses an extensive collection of artifacts, documents, photographs, and artwork related to Maryland's history. The museum features several exhibits that showcase different aspects of Maryland's past such as its maritime heritage, African American history, Civil War era artifacts and much more.
In addition to the museum exhibits, the society also operates a research library that provides access to an extensive collection of books, manuscripts, maps and other resources related to Maryland's history. The library is open to researchers by appointment only but offers online resources for those who cannot visit in person.
The education department at the society offers various programs for students ranging from pre-K through college level. These programs include field trips to the museum or outreach programs where educators bring historical materials into classrooms across the state. Additionally they offer teacher training workshops which provide educators with tools they need to teach about local history effectively.
One unique aspect of this organization is their commitment towards digitizing their collections so that people can access them online from anywhere in the world. This initiative has made it possible for researchers worldwide who are interested in studying or learning about Maryland’s rich cultural heritage without having physically visited their location.
The Society also hosts events throughout the year such as lectures by historians on various topics related to Maryland’s past; book signings by authors who have written about local history; concerts featuring traditional music from around our state; family-friendly activities like scavenger hunts or craft-making workshops during holidays like Halloween or Christmas time!
Overall if you're looking for an immersive experience into all things historical within our great state then look no further than The Maryland Historical Society!
