When they say it's a must go to place, they are not lying. It was a slow night when my family and I went and we were treated with the most hospitality I have ever seen in a restaurant. Our server and server in training were engaging and knowledgeable. The food was delicious and traditional, and dessert was fantastic. We had pecan pie and the bread pudding. We love food and this place does not disappoint!
Bonus: leftovers get wrapped up into a tinfoil swan

Good food and service but overrated. I live in San Francisco area so we have classy restaurants but they are very warm, friendly and welcoming to all. This place felt like a rich-folks eatery in a plantation-of-the-past for few reasons. Not sure if it's by accident or by design that we could not help notice, that every server in upstairs Garden room except for one lady was white and all African Americans were in black attires bringing food from kitchen to a corner, with no interaction with any customer (Photos attached). After watching it for a while, it just felt wrong, and we wanted to finish and leave quickly and not patronize this business anymore. Also, (this happened with us) watch-out for undertones of disapproval and passive aggressive rudeness with a smile if you try to change the table they designate for you. Feels like the ambience is fake and is unpalatable literally. Our 1st and last visit to Commander's Palace.
PS. They have such a great opportunity to recognize, understand, appreciate, respect and embrace diversity to rewrite history of Louisiana. Hope they evolve some day.

Located in the pretty garden district. Commanders Palace is great for couples. The staff are friendly and informative for first timers. There is a dress code business attire no jeans. Our server Samantha was great and made a great crepe at the table. Food had good flavor and made to order. Prices are high but made for quality of dishes. We do recommend it.

And you can t leave without trying on of their dessert s! If you plan ahead of time and make reservations, make sure you ask for the green room upstairs, usually where the locals dine!

Agreeing with all the others who say you must make this a stop on your tour of New Orleans. The service by the staff was incredible, everything we ordered was delicious, and the place itself was a real treat to behold. We will definitely be coming back, they seem to have enough different rooms to dine in to provide a unique experience each time.

I rarely give out 5 star reviews as I am very picky and easily see faults in places and service. This place had none - Service was impeccable, Food was awesome, the atmosphere classy, location - great for after or before dining walks and pricing was more than fair. I was truly impressed.
This is the first place on I would recommend to go have a great dinner or lunch to anyone visiting NOLA.

This was an amazing experiance. We ordered 3 cocktails, 1 appetizer, the trio of soups, 3 entrees. We also found ourselves ordering 3 desserts.
Now, the cocktails were ok, old school style and not bad but nothing to write home about. Our appetizers, now those were something to talk about. The shrimp appetizer had a thick buttery and slightly sweet base with sweet and hot peppers and as well as okra. It was delicious as an appetizer and as a dip for the most ridiculously crunchy bread I have ever had.
The main courses were great. We took two fish dishes and one lamb dish. The lamb had mushrooms cooked in cognac and that idea stand put. It's very earthy and very filling. The two fish dishes were done beautifully. The pecan crusted dish had huge lumps of crab on the plate the grilled fish had a base of sweet peppers and tomatoes. Fantastic experience
The best part of the night was desserts. We originally intended to have one dessert. The famous souffle bread pudding. You have to order this ahead of time and it is worth it. So light and airy with some chewy crumb and a delicate filling. It is served with brandy sauce and it melts in your mouth.
However, after hearing Billy our other waiter talk about the house creme brulee, we just had to order it. It comes out in a shallow green rimmed plate with a powdered sugar design. The melted sugar crust is a little on the darker side and the burnt Carmel taste contrasts perfectly with the rich creamy custard. There is a perfect balance between the carmel and the custard and it melts in your mouth.
That should have been the end of the night until we realized the hotel served the original banana fosters desserts and we wanted the flambe experience. So our waiter Jared brought over the stove, a couple of bananas, butter, sugar and the rum and made a flaming desserts at the table side. His commentry had us in stitches and dessert was not bad.
I think one reason apart from food that makes the experience stand out is the service. We felt the warmth and satisfaction exuded from everyone. Our first waiter Jared had a dry sense of humor that had us cracking up. Billy, an amazing old gentleman would stop over and answer any question we had kept us well supplied. We did tour the kitchen at the end and talked with the chief chef and everyone sounded happy and that really cinched it for me.
This is a night to remember

Commander's Palace, nestled in the middle of the tree-lined Garden District, has been a New Orleans landmark since 1893. Known for the award-winning quality of its food and its convivial atmosphere, the history of this famous restaurant offers a glimpse into New Orleans' storied past and has been the go-to destination for Haute Creole cuisine and whimsical Louisiana charm. The winner of seven James Beard Foundation Awards, Commander's Palace has evolved into a culinary legend.

I understand that people want to feel important, and if paying hundreds of dollars for an ok meal while dressing up is your thing, you will love it.
The turtle soup tasted like an oil spill. The pecan pie was the worst I have ever had. It had some sort of gelatin used as the filling. The crust was oily and too hard to cut with the dessert spoon. The steak was good and very tender, although a tad bit undercooked. The duck was also quite good.
The place felt like I had walked into my very own nightmare... it was like sitting with a bunch of lobbyists in Washington DC. I picked up on absolutely zero vibe of New Orleans, the south, or the gulf. The mansion was beautiful, in a delightful neighborhood.
The waiters were pretty good, and I tipped appropriately.
My meal was $140 for 2 people. I would have been a bit disappointed if it was a total of $40, but the extra $100 made the experience comically unbelievable.
For the best food, go to La Habichuela in Cancun. For the best service, go to India Palace in Tulsa, OK.

Fine dining at its finest! This was a special dinner date for my husband and I while in town for Jazz Fest, and it was worth the trip! Southern hospitality was epitomized when we were greeted no less than a dozen times before even sitting down, and were then greeted by name when the server arrived, followed by a personal welcome from the owner herself. The food was devine, the Louisiana strawberry salad to start, the most incredible Pecan crusted fish in an amazing sauce with Louisiana blue crab and for dessert the best bread pudding I have ever had! Whatever you do, make sure you order the bread budding, for real!

We always go to Commander's Place for dinner when we are in NO. Love the atmosphere! Love that there are so many different dining rooms that you can go there several times and have the experience of being at a different restaurant each time. The food is great with many selections to choose from. The service is outstanding! Just had a bad experience with my husband 's steak not being hot. Sent it back twice and they brought it back warm both times. That's my only complaint.

I'd be lying if I said I weren't a little underwhelmed. While the food was certainly very good, I'd stop well short of calling it wowing. For the price, I expected more. My dish, the Hanoi Shrimp Rice Bowl was overall one-dimensional and lacking in complexity. The crushed peanuts that were left out would have provided some much needed texture variety to what was other wise one mostly characterized by mushiness. The shrimp were cooked great, but were outshone by other components of the dish. You would think that the shrimp used in an upscale, expensive restaurant in NOLA of all places would have been the star of the show, but it was honestly the veggie julienne and chimichurri that defined the plate. The dining room was very nice, but it was uncomfortably hot. Service was very good, and the cocktails were good. I can't help but feel like the place takes itself way too seriously (what with the dress code and all) and is priced higher than the quality of the food merits. Overall a pretty nice meal, but certainly nothing amazing, and not what I'd call a must have dining experience.

An incredible restaurant with lots of History , great food and impeccable service. This type of restaurant in Chicago would cost double so in my mind it is a great value. They make the best classic New Orleans cocktails and have a sophisticated menu that changes but includes variations on all the local specialties. The service is the best I've ever had in any restaurant
For years, my wife and I have traveled to NOLA to ...
For years, my wife and I have traveled to NOLA to celebrate special occasions at Commander s, and we have never left disappointed. That streak came to an end this week. We went with Chef Meg s Three Course Offerings. Romaine salad was very good, but doesn t hold a candle to the iceberg salad at Mr. B s. Pecan pie and strawberry shortcake were good, but those deserts are almost impossible to ruin. The issue was the main course, Wild Louisiana White Shrimp Curry. Our food arrived at room temperature. The cauliflower, carrots, and sweet potatoes were hard and raw. The crispy artichokes were like thin strips of charred paper and added nothing to the dish. The bitter chili-citrus flavor overwhelmed the flavors. The coconut curry broth was just a bit of prepared curry powder in coconut milk. No one who eats Asian curry would have mistaken this for the real thing, which is made from a fresh mix of spices. The curry sauce was a cop-out from an establishment that should elevate the dish to the highest level. The clash between the bitter citrus and mild curry powder and sweet coconut milk was a complete mismatch of flavors. If I had made this dish as Commander s did, we would have picked out the shrimp and thrown the rest away, which is what we did. The server made no mention of removing nearly full bowls from our table. If I had made this dish, it would have cost me $6, not $60, for ingredients. Chef Meg needs to figure out if this is a bitter chili-citrus bowl or a real coconut curry sauce, fix it, or get it off the menu. And serve it hot with cooked vegetables.

The ambiance and the service was very good. I felt like this place was too hyped. I had the pork chop and it was good but the turtle was different for me. The souffle was very good and sweet. My partner had the root beer braised short ribs and it lacked flavor. Overall I would recommend this place.

Very prestigious and obviously very expensive restaurant, a status symbol for New Orleans. The dishes are very sought after, based on Creole cuisine and very spicy. Generally it is very crowded and you can hardly speak. Go there as if you should visit an important museum or local institution. Conversely, you will find the same dishes and culinary amenities practically everywhere (except turtle soup).
