So Glad for this wonderful ministry. God blesses those who reach out to the poor, the hurting, the sick and wounded. This place goes above and beyond the call. There are many many eternal rewards awaiting the pastor, staff and volunteers from the Highlands. Shout it out from the rooftops.

Growing up as a missionary kid, I've been in many churches all over the world and I can say that Church of the Highlands practices what it preaches. People are loving and kind. What the person above said about COH not welcoming African Americans is ridiculous. COH welcomes anyone and everyone, just exactly as you are. You aren't going to be looked down on because of how you dress, what your sexual orientation is, or the color of your skin. Our goal is to be like Christ and he never looked down on anyone... except the people practicing hypocrisy in the church, such as the money changers and the religious leaders who were leading people astray from the true nature of God and we certainly don't want to be like those folks. This is the closest church to what I imagine the church in Jerusalem being in the 1st century AD and is one church that I enthusiastically recommend to everyone I can. This isn't a church were you come and soak in a dry sermon every Sunday and then forget about it during the week. This is a church that's busy expanding the Kingdom of God in so many ways that it would be impossible for me to list them all and you can be a part of it all. If you want an active, growing, Bible-centered church led by a pastor you can't wait to hear every Sunday, come join us!

This church and the people here have changed my life! I have been attending with my 2 children for the past 4 years or so. I was drawn to the positive energy and atmosphere the first time I attended. I immediately got plugged in and my life has been forever changed. I would say check it out...what do you have to lose?!

This church has beautiful community initiatives HOWEVER the staff and their execution is terrible. There are a few friendly faces here and there but over all they will talk to you as if you are nothing and make you feel worse than you already do. There are also issues of the staff bringing personal problems into the church. Mrs.Debra who over sees the community meals has issues with acting inappropriatly both in and out of the church. She has had personal problems with patrons outside of the church and instead of being a leader and letting the situation roll off her shoulders she had to be petty and bring it up at the church as she attempted to follow the patron through the building. Theres no reason to be ugly to anyone within a church much less try to single people out because your unsatisfied.

Disappointed about the latest development concerning the pastor. God's children should be on their best behavior at all times, even when there is nobody around. You cannot be associated with negativity and not have some within yourself. Like we tell our kids you hang around a certain type of crowd you will eventually become like that crowd, adults are no exception!

Attended GROW 2018 conference here. Completely wowed by the excellence that every team member showed. Everyone was very courteous. They dry the cans of soda before handing them out--they go the extra mile. I was blessed to have the experience.

This church has changed my perspective on life and has brought me into a closer relationship with God. You can see God's hand in this life giving church. I noticed that another commenter mentioned that it was very Republican and unwelcoming. My experience with this Church has been the exact opposite, I have never felt anything but love at this church from the first time I attended the Grants Mill campus. Also you can tell the head pastor, Pastor Chris, is very welcoming, loving, and genuine.

My sister and I had one of the most traumatic experiences of our lives at this church. We both have a heart condition for which we've had heart surgery for. During a service there, my sister felt her heart rate rising because of the loud music and other reasons. I also have a medical background as a paramedic. So my parents asked me to bring her outside to help her calm down. So I brought her outside and we were sitting on the grass talking. I was asking her about her day at school and her heart rate was coming down. Shortly after we got outside, an Irondale police car pulled up by us and asked us what we were doing. I tried explaining the situation but this officer told us we couldn't be outside and couldn't be in the grass. There wasn't any signage that said we couldn't sit on the grass so I didn't understand why it was a big deal. (I was 24 years old at the time, so an adult, and could decide if I wanted to be outside during service.) But we were told we had to go back inside. I also had a walking cast on because I'm disabled and recently had foot/ankle surgery. We got up and started walking, very slowly though because of my foot and because my sister's heart rate was getting really high again but this time because this officer was scaring us. As we were walking along the sidewalk, he was following us in his car. He had his window rolled down and was telling us to go faster. I was trying to tell him why we couldn't go faster. He got out of his car, said to stop making excuses, threw me up against a wall and told me he was going to arrest me! For not listening! I was doing everything he was asking but because he couldn't go as quickly as he wanted, he abused his position. By the time we got back inside, Denny Hodges (Head Pastor's brother) was there and I was desperately trying to tell him what happened. I didn't want that officer near us. He took the cop's side. He was the last person that should've been handling a situation like that. My sister ended up going into a cardiac event, but now it was brought on by the cop with a power trip! The very thing I was trying to help her avoid all along. So they had to call for medical help for her. Everything I told that cop was true. He never asked me how old we were. A few weeks later, Denny and another pastor from the church asked to meet us. Basically, Denny just wanted to see if we were going to attempt to pursue legal action against the church. He didn't care about how me and my sister were doing. He told us he had a talk with the officer. That was it! Barely a slap on the wrist for horrifying and threatening innocent young ladies with one being a child! Denny had the gall to tell my mom that to the officer's defense, her daughters look really young. So I guess because we look young, that's a good enough reason to treat us like criminals. Like I said, he never bothered asking our ages. He incorrectly assumed we were both children. The very last place you should be threatened is your church!! I was telling them the truth the whole time and yet no one believed me. I even worked at the Pelham campus doing childcare once a week and when I told him that, he looked at me like I was lying. This was the most terrifying thing I've been through. I've never, ever been in any kind of trouble. Not even a speeding ticket! And yet while I'm at church, trying to help my sister, I'm threatened and physical assaulted! Denny said the cop was there because he works at a school and is good at picking out problem kids and dealing with them. If my sister and me looked like a problem, he needs to retire. There's nothing about us that looks problematic. We didn't even have any bags or purses with us. Afterwards, I dealt with all kinds of issues. I had to lock my door to my bedroom at night because it was the only way I could get to sleep. I didn't feel safe. I also had nightmares for a while. All this from church. It's so wrong! There's more to this experience but I told the bulk. This experience did happen several years back but I've never been back to this church. I never, ever will.

This is not the kind of church I'm accustomed to attending. I was raised as a Catholic and that's the type of church that I prefer to attend. However, if this church can get our young people into it the more people that will attend the better this world is so more power to you Church of the Highlands! And may God bless everyone that attends there.

The step made to become part of the church family at Highlands has been live changing. Talk about the bible in action. Never have I had the pleasure of freely being a part of God's purpose and being blessed to have taken almost a year to see if they would actually waver in their spoken beliefs etc. The more that we attended as a family, the more that we began to hunger to hear the word of God each Sunday. Not only did we hunger to hear the word of God more, but we began to apply it more. We began to truly hold ourselves accountable. Most importantly, we finally agreed as a family to become a part of the body of Christ that reflected God's word and God's ways. I thirst to want to go to church every Sunday. I gladly want to serve on outreach Saturdays. It is a sheer joy to also be around individuals who actually while working during outreach speak about the gospel in various ways. It is not a time to gossip. Even during small group gatherings, we talk about Jesus. When we pray, it is praying for the needs of another or those presented before us. God is indeed the center of it all. That makes our church unique to me. No longer do I feel that I need to go check out other churches or seek a church that will welcome ALL of my family members. Our children enjoy church more than ever now. Our youngest enjoys the praise and worship. Our son enjoys being able to follow along with the sermon notes (not sure if they know that they have made service accessible by doing so). How awesome it is to come as we are and no need to feel uncomfortable whether we choose to wear jeans, or dress up. The point is, NOBODY gives you the sense of not being welcomed because you are so very welcomed and welcomed with open arms. What a joy it is to truly examine ourselves daily and to hear so much about the love of Christ instead of so much damnation that I use to hear. We hear the word of God. We hear about being active in the kingdom. We are not forced to be a part of anything, but the longer that we attend, the more that we were hungry to do more and be more. Life changing...no other way to put it...life changing.

I'm 36 years old now and this is the first time in my entire life that I have found a church that is so accepting to everyone, completely comfortable in every way and has a wonderful pastor who only preaches God's word from the Bible, not any "man's" opinion or interpretation. I love this church so much and I'm very blessed to be able to be a part of it. I would definitely recommend anyone and everyone to come try it out because I know you'll be impressed and moved.

back about 3 years ago or so I use to spend a lot of time in the Birmingham area & I absolutely Loved the Church of the Highlands. Since then my fiance and I have moved to Florence Alabama and still have not found a church as special as the Highlands. To everyone who has not yet attended Church of the Highlands you must give it a try, this church is very special.

Great place to worship and with multiple locations there is an experience for everyone. Chapel provides a much more traditional experience and the campus locations located all over the state offer locations close to home. One more plus is the ability to tune in online when your out of town or want to share with family that doesn't live close. The pastor is friendly and life giving. But it all comes together with small groups. Nothing makes you feel more welcome then getting to know the people around you and joining one of the hundreds of groups they have helps tremendously with that.

Fantastic messages and worship! It's a big place but it doesn't seem like it when you get in a small group or serve team. There are so many awesome events and there is something for everyone. Our entire family, including teens, can't wait for each opportunity to go hear God's Word, experience His Grace, and share in worship.

We understand how important it is for children to have a safe space where they can learn about God's love in an age-appropriate way. That's why we have dedicated Children's Ministries at each location.

Our trained volunteers provide fun activities, engaging lessons, and loving care so parents can attend services with peace of mind knowing their children are well taken care of.

Teenagers face unique challenges as they navigate through adolescence into adulthood. At Church of the Highlands, we recognize this critical stage in life by providing youth programs designed specifically for them.

Through our youth ministry programs such as small groups or retreats teenagers will find support from peers who share similar experiences while learning about Jesus Christ’s teachings on how to live fulfilling lives based on Christian values like kindness or forgiveness which will help them make better decisions when faced with difficult situations later on down the road!

Community Outreach Programs

As part of our commitment to serving our community beyond just Sunday mornings or Wednesday nights at church service times; we also offer various outreach programs throughout the year such as food drives or volunteer opportunities at local charities like Habitat For Humanity which allow us not only give back but also build relationships within those communities too!
