I booked Coco Key through my bank's travel discounts, I had never heard of it before and I stay in the Universal are at least 6 times a year. After booking (non-refundable) I Googled it and found many negative reviews. I was extremely worried, especially because it was my husband's birthday weekend and he has respiratory issues and I was concerned about all the reviews that referenced "mildew" or "mold" and thus possibly ruining his weekend.

We arrived to the hotel which looks slightly dated, and were greeted pleasantly. The check in process was smooth. The room was nice for the price. It appears to have been recently painted and the floors maybe changed as it was not carpet. The room next to us was vacant and had the lights on and looked just like ours, so we assumed that section must have been upgraded. We were poolside and the areas that I could see all looked clean. We didn't have the chance to use the water area because my kids were sick and it was cold, so we limited our stay to our room.

The only negatives I experienced: the sink drained slowly, so water would accumulate there. The toilet had very low pressure and we had some issues with flushing thoroughly. The appliances were inexpensive and the iron and the coffee maker leaked slightly during use. I went to hang a shirt and the hanger broke. There were a minimum amount of towels. The walls are a bit thin. All of these were minor nuisances and definitely not deal breakers. At one point we needed a microwave and called to see if there was one available for use in the lobby and the person said they'd bring one to us - it was there within 3 minutes!!! We were pleasantly surprised.

It is evident that this is an older place but it is undergoing some major positive changes. Denisse was extremely helpful during our stay. I believe the new management is really trying hard to bring it up to standards and we could definitely see their efforts - when we were checking out we noticed some workers and several paint cans as if they were working inside a room. I am sure there are many that, unfortunately, haven't had the experience that we were able to have, but I think this place definitely deserves a chance. Great accomodation for the price, I would not hesitate to stay here again.
